Villa Selina

Just down the road in nautical terms from Rhodes and hugging the shores of Asia Minor lies one of the jewels of the Aegean, the island of Symi. Although its origins can be traced back to ancient Greece and is the stuff of Greek myth, Symi reached its zenith in terms of influence, prosperity and culture during the Ottoman empire. Its sponge- fishing, boat- building and wine-making industries flourished as its merchants traded far and wide. Its fine neo-classical villas, many of them with richly decorated interiors, and its monasteries and churches are testament to Symi's wealth and influence, so brutally brought to an end by two World Wars and mass emigration of its population.

“We love the tranquility of this beautiful house, solid, lovely and quiet on pristine blue sea over which we could almost swim to Asia Minor.”

Small and difficult to get to by mass tourism standards, Symi has escaped the havoc wrought by property developers in neighbouring islands and along the Turkish coast. Once littered with ruined dwellings, its harbour stretching up into the hillside looks much as it would have done in the late 19th century when the population peaked as some 20,000. Today it is a lively town, with excellent shops and some very good restaurants serving traditional but also international food of a high standard. Boats leave for the outlying beaches, negotiating with the arrival and departure of some of the finest private shipping you will see anywhere in the world.

“Thank you for the best holiday I've EVER had. I'll never forget the peace, the soothing sound of goatbells, the beautiful garden, and the best swimming in the mediterranean.”

An easy walk or short drive from Symi port, lies the ancient settlement of Nimborio. Its houses, by far the largest and most luxurious of which is Villa Selina, benefit from shoreline access to the pristine waters of a beautiful bay and , in season, a simple beachside taverna that is the epitome of Greek island living the way it used to be. Villa Selina is unique.  Built by the owner for her own friends and family, it brings together traditional Greek style with modern comfort.  Above all it offers space, inside and out. The garden, huge by Greek island standards, is lovingly tended throughout the year and the massive stone structure recalls the best of Greek vernacular architecture. If you choose to dine in town, you will have to walk or drive home, but you will wake in the morning on the edge of a gigantic, natural swimming pool, with space to breathe, and you will never want to leave.
